The Importance of Prioritizing Mental Health

Mental health crisis in India: urgent need for whole-of-society approach to protect, promote and care for the mental wellbeing of our people. Suicide rates are alarmingly high, with young adults and women most affected. The pandemic has worsened the situation, leading to increased prevalence of depression and anxiety, especially among younger age groups. Social media is exacerbating stress and mental ill health, further eroding self-esteem. Mental ill-health has wider socio-economic implications, perpetuating a vicious cycle of disadvantage and poverty. A well-resourced ‘whole-of-society’ approach is urgently required, based on four pillars, to tackle this growing crisis.
